Description
Hawaiians favored net fishing over other methods. It allowed fishermen to catch many fish at once and they could be used from shore or from a canoe. Sometimes a community would fish together. This was called a hukilau where everyone worked as one to pull in a large net spread in shallow water near shore. The large amount of fish was then divided equally among the group. This fisherman friend of mine throw net fishes off the Puna coast of the island of Hawai'i. The manini is a favorite shoreline reef fish in Hawaii.
