The Nanu or Hawaiian Gardenia brighamii is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands and at one time thought to have occurred on all of the main islands. The plant was used by the Hawaiians as a cloth dye, and grew well mostly in the lowland dry forest. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was considered common on west Moloka`i and Maui, but today is very rare on all the Hawaiian islands. This photograph was taken in Kapoho near an area south of Hilo on the island of Hawaii. The Hawaiian Gardenia brighamii, is a bush like tree that may grow up to 20 feet in height. The flowers are smaller than the Tahitian Gardenia that grow more commonly in Hawaii, are white and very fragrant.
I feel my photographs captures and shares my moments of intimacy and the relationship between light, shadow, and the element of composition of my beautifu Hawai’i. As a photographer and a Hawaiian woman I try to convey through my photography the love for my Hawai’i with an understanding of the traditional Hawaiian value, that all natural resources of our environment, the ocean "kai", the land "aina", and the sky "lani", are interrelated and culturally significant to Hawaii and its people. “What I like about photographs is that they capture a moment that’s gone forever, impossible to reproduce.” In my photography I try to capture the moments of my life I want to remember.
