Description
These Nēnē, Hawaiian geese couple, flew out over toward the ocean, then turned around and back landing at Leleiwi beach park in Keaukaha, Hawai’i. Just a calming moment for the morning…and a beautiful day! Nēnē are monogamous and mate for life. Unlike most waterfowl, the Nēnē mates on land. The Nēnē enter the breeding season which lasts from August to April and 2 -5 eggs are laid between November and January. The incubation period is 29-32 days. Goslings take 70-84 days to fledge from their parents.
The official state bird of Hawaii comes with an interesting history. Scientists believe that the Nēnē original ancestor was Branta canadensis, the Canada goose, which likely arrived in the Hawaiian islands nearly 500,000 years ago.
